Baccalaureate / Doctor of Medicine Scholarship Guidelines

The 91社区 B/MD Scholarship promotes academic excellence in pre-medical undergraduate studies. Additional program goals are as follows:

  • To increase the number of physicians providing medical services to Indiana residents residing in Southwestern and Southern Indiana.
  • To increase opportunities for Indiana residents, especially those who reside in the Southwestern and Southern portions of the state, to obtain education and training in Indiana University School of Medicine.
  • To enhance the State鈥檚 efforts in medical education, research, and services focusing on medical issues in Indiana.

Eligibility

Students eligible to apply to the program must be residents of Indiana and meet the following criteria:

  • A minimum SAT score of 1280, or an ACT score of 27 AND
  • High school grade point average of at least 3.5/4.0

Application

Admission to the joint B/MD program is a dual process. Students entering the program will be independently accepted into the undergraduate program at the 91社区 and the medical degree program at Indiana University School of Medicine. The following procedure will be followed:

  1. Applications will be sent to the B/MD Advisory Committee at the Indiana University School of Medicine-Evansville and the 91社区; at the same time you must submit an application for admission to the 91社区. You will not be considered for the scholarship without having applied to 91社区.
  2. The B/MD Advisory Committee will arrange for qualified candidates to have an interview with members of that committee.
  3. Applications from selected qualified students will then be forwarded to the Admissions Committee of Indiana University School of Medicine to be verified as B/MD scholars.
  4. Final selection and admission to the School of Medicine will be the responsibility of the Admissions Committee of Indiana University School of Medicine.

Neither acceptance into the 91社区 nor a recommendation to forward the student鈥檚 application to the Admissions Committee of Indiana University School of Medicine guarantees acceptance by the School of Medicine. Selected students will have a provisional seat in Indiana University School of Medicine.

NOTE: Students who decline 91社区鈥檚 offer of a B/MD Scholarship forfeit all future entitlement to this award.

Provisional Indiana University School of Medicine Matriculation

Once admitted into the program the student must meet defined criteria to claim the provisional seat reserved in the Indiana University School of Medicine. Those criteria are as follows:

  1. Continuous enrollment.
  2. A cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0 is required for the first 60 undergraduate hours and a cumulative GPA of 3.5/4.0 from 61 hours until Baccalaureate degree is completed. Please note: students should have a 3.5 GPA by the end of their sophomore year. Otherwise, students should consider taking summer classes to make up the GPA deficit.
  3. Students must take the MCAT and obtain a score equal to the average of the previous year鈥檚 entering class at Indiana University School of Medicine.
  4. Completion of required coursework includes course designed specifically for the B/MD program.
  5. Completion of the AMCAS application and interview for the Indiana University of School of Medicine.

Students may major in any field but must complete specified courses for this program and application to medical school. If a student fails to meet the above requirements, they will not be allowed to matriculate directly into the Indiana University School of Medicine. The student may seek admission to the School of Medicine through normal pathways.

Scholarship Renewal

The award will be renewed automatically if the student earns a minimum of 27 semester hours each academic year (fall/spring), and maintains the required minimum grade point average as indicated for the Provisional IUSM Matriculation. Students may receive the B/MD Scholarship for a maximum of 8 consecutive semesters from the date of initial enrollment, or the point at which a student earns his/her first undergraduate degree, whichever comes first. Awards are coordinated with other tuition-specific aid (if applicable) to ensure that the total of such aid does not exceed actual tuition charges.

Under exceptional circumstances, a student may initially petition the Program Coordinator for a "leave of absence" for one semester and at the coordinator鈥檚 discretion it may be forwarded to the BMD Scholarship Committee for further review.

Recipients who fail to meet retention and progression requirements will be dismissed from the program and the B/MD Scholarship will be forfeited. If a student fails to meet minimum requirements for the B/MD, but meets the minimum grade point average and other requirements of the Rice Scholarship, it will be reinstated at the request of the student.

Official enrollment is determined on census day (end of the first week) of each semester. The Office of Financial Assistance will evaluate earned hours (fall/spring) after spring grades are final.

Summer Term

Tuition will be provided for summer coursework of 11 semester hours or less. Summer coursework totaling 12 or more semester hours will count as 1 of the 8 allowable semesters. Students who fail to meet requirements may attend summer term to regain eligibility. Students need to submit an appeal (at the end of summer term) to reinstate their award if summer is used to regain eligibility.

NOTE: All scholarship participants must maintain good standing at 91社区. Students who are dismissed from the University forfeit all entitlement to the B/MD Scholarship.

Additional information can be found on the B/MD Program page.

Appeals Process

Students may request exceptions to the B/MD Scholarship Rules and Regulations when unusual or mitigating circumstances warrant such action. Appeals must be submitted in writing to the Financial Assistance Appeals Committee at 91社区. Send all correspondence to the

Decisions of the Appeals Committee are final.
