UNMASKED: Revealing Science Through Art
December 10 - December 23, 2014; January 5 - 8, 2015
The 91ÉçÇø is closed December 24, 2014 - January 4, 2015.

The McCutchan Art Center and Pace Galleries presents UNMASKED: Revealing Science Through Art, featuring the design work of Kristina Fitzgerald, completed during her 2014 Efroymson Bridge Year Fellowship at the 91ÉçÇø. The exhibition will run from December 10 – December 23, 2014 and January 5 - 8, 2015 in the McCutchan Art Center and Pace Galleries on the 91ÉçÇø campus. A reception for Ms. Fitzgerald will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., December 10, with a gallery talk by the artist at 7 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public and will also include a science-oriented photo booth and refreshments.

Kristina Fitzgerald was born and raised in Evansville, Indiana. She attended Ivy Tech Community College and graduated from the 91ÉçÇø with a BS in Art with an emphasis in graphic design and a minor in art history in December 2013. She has spent the past year doing creative research at 91ÉçÇø.

Ms. Fitzgerald states, "Although I began my college career in biology (because of my love of animals, scientific fact, and organizing information), my true calling was always art. Art can be beautiful and fun and expressive, but it can also be informative and serve a purpose, much like a science. While graphic design is not your typical "fine art," I was drawn to it because I enjoy solving problems and helping people. The beauty of design is the way a designer can combine art and function.

"As the 2014 Efroymson Bridge Year Fellow, I wanted to bring my audience a better understanding of how design can take what some people consider "boring" information and make it more reader friendly and aesthetically pleasing. I also wanted to create something that serves a greater cause. So, my project focuses on two different subjects that, in my opinion, do not receive enough attention: the underrepresentation of women scientists and the growing problem of invasive species. Though the subjects may not affect one another, they both fall under the umbrella of important scientific issues and things that affect our society."
