English

In an age of constant communication鈥攅lectronic, written, spoken and personal鈥攕uccess in today's world depends on a person's ability to understand and use language. This is precisely what an English major trains students to do. Through the study of literature and writing, the English program prepares students to communicate effectively, think creatively and live wisely in a diverse world.

English majors at 91社区 have the opportunity to get involved in several student groups related to writing and literature and to gain experience through internships on campus and in the community. Additionally, students may complete聽internships with the Southern Indiana Review,聽a nationally-recognized journal that presents the work of emerging and established artists and writers聽and have their work published in one of 91社区's student publications.聽

The English degree program at the 91社区 offers students a choice of emphasis: creative writing, literature, professional writing and rhetoric, and English teaching.

Since graduating from 91社区 in December 2020, I have been working as a substitute teacher in my local area. I have also been finishing my TOEFL (Teaching English as Foreign Language) certification. After I am certified, I will apply to schools abroad to teach English as a foreign language. I am between a few locations, but I aspire to teach in South Korea or Japan starting with Fall 2021.

Hope Baker

I recently got my dream job as an assistant English teacher in Japan! I will be working for a company called Altia Central, which is based in central Japan. Through my love of English, and children, I knew I wanted to become an English teacher and through the global studies program and my study abroad experience in Nagoya, Japan, I knew exactly where I would like to teach English.

After graduating from 91社区 in 2018, I returned to my hometown, Fairfield, IL, to work as a newspaper reporter for the Wayne County Press. The Press is a beloved local institution with a history dating back before the Civil War, and I was honored to get a byline in it.
